Fall Home Maintenance To-Do’s

Fall Home Maintenance To-Do’s

 Ten Indoor Home Maintenance To-Do’s

  1. Close crawl space vents – They’re useful in summer for airflow, but in winter, leaving them open lets in cold air.

  2. Seal entry points for critters – Patch any gaps in siding or foundation to keep squirrels, mice, and other wildlife from sneaking inside.

  3. Service your heating system & chimney – Clean or replace filters, schedule a furnace check, and have your chimney inspected to prevent carbon monoxide issues.

  4. Check your fireplace – Make sure gas or electric fireplaces are safe to use. If you burn wood, stock up on firewood.

  5. Inspect pipes for leaks – Fix drips and insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing and costly damage.

  6. Clean humidifiers – Prevent mold and bacteria buildup before running them through the dry winter months.

  7. Test safety devices – Replace batteries in smoke and CO detectors, and check your fire extinguisher’s expiration date.

  8. Evaluate insulation – Add weather stripping to doors/windows, consider storm windows, and check attics/basements for drafts or moisture.

  9. Declutter your home – Fall is a great time to donate or toss what you no longer use—especially before spending more time indoors.

  10. Make it cozy – Add warm lighting, candles, seasonal décor, or baked treats to create a welcoming space (and wow buyers if you’re selling!).

 Ten Outdoor Home Maintenance To-Do’s

  1. Disconnect and store hoses – Drain and put away hoses/reels before the first freeze.

  2. Clear gutters and downspouts – Prevent clogs and ice dams by removing leaves and debris. Consider gutter guards for extra protection.

  3. Check your roof – Replace damaged shingles and clear debris to avoid winter leaks.

  4. Seal cracks in walkways/driveways – Cold expands gaps in concrete or asphalt—fix them before winter makes it worse.

  5. Prep outdoor equipment – Drain fuel from mowers and yard tools for an easier spring start.

  6. Tend to shrubs and trees – Remove annuals, cut back perennials, and insulate delicate trees if needed.

  7. Rake and reuse leaves – They make great mulch for flower beds or nutrient-rich compost.

  8. Fertilize your lawn – A fall feeding strengthens roots for a lush spring return.

  9. Line up snow removal – Secure a plow service now instead of scrambling mid-blizzard.

  10. Protect outdoor furniture – Clean and store patio sets and cushions to keep them in good condition.
